...a whole lot. I've of course heard of
Dabel Brothers before [largely from Brett Booth who updates his fans on
deviantart.com] but I'd never picked up a book from this company [not even one Brett was working on ;) ]. When I saw Chance I knew I had to pick it up.
Having Scott Clark do the cover was fantastic, I've been following his work since before Storm Watch and recognized it right away. In addition to him just being a great artist, his style meshes well with
Adrian's who's interiors, in my opinion, were clean and vibrant. Perfect for a story like this.
Speaking of "meshing";Jason's colors [particularly pg 2 & pg 17] and Melissa's letters pull the entire project together. Very nice. I can't remember the last time I picked up a book that WASN'T lettered by Richard Starking's Comiccraft crew. Very nice.
My one "point of interest" that I would draw your attention too is that I nearly DIDN'T pick it up due to the title of issue #1: City of Heroes. My original thought being that the book was a tie in with the game [which I'd love to play, but have not the time to devote to it] but I kept pushing through the pages and eventually thought "I don't care" and purchased it anyhow. Glad I did.
One thing that I REALLY enjoyed was how simple the plot, story, and universe were. Don't take that as a criticism, its really a good thing. The reader is quickly and easily introduced to a set of characters, in a semi-unique universe that is just general enough to be easily accessible to the new reader and just original enough to make it there own. I think every new comic book creator/company strives for exactly that.
I'm looking forward to issue two, and hoping to meet a few of these "powered" heroes along the way.
By the way, 50% of the proceeds of issue one go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. So, go and do you're fan boy duty people.
